How To Become an Insurance Agent in Canada

A solid career may be closer than you think. It certainly isn’t glamorous, and you won’t get rich doing it, but becoming an insurance agent can be a step in the right direction towards your financial freedom. A position in this field isn’t exactly highly sought after, but there is always a need for insurance agents. Say goodbye to worrying about a falling through with this job.

If you have a knack for sales, then this can be a very profitable job for you. Licensed and regulated by provincial governments in order to protect the Canadian residents, insurance agents are very important roles in peoples’ lives. The exact process to become licensed as an agent varies by province, there is a general ladder you must climb that is the same across Canada.

When your parents used to tell you how important an education was, they weren’t just making that up. Most companies won’t even take a look at you if they don’t see that you possess a high school diploma. While a diploma is the absolute minimum, a college degree is preferred for employment. Your next step is to get hired by a company that is willing to sponsor you. Generally speaking, an employer must sponsor you in order to become an insurance agent, with your license only being active while employed. To find positions look at insurance agencies, financial agencies, and brokerages. Don’t be afraid to call around and ask if they’re hiring, either.

Depending on the province you reside in, determine the training required to obtain your license. Not only the province makes a difference in your licensing requirements, but also the type of insurance you are going to be selling. You may contact your provincial insurance ministry to find the specific list of courses you must complete in order to become an insurance agent.

Your next step will to be to put all of your hard research and efforts to work and actually apply for your license to sell insurance. Be aware that they may request proof of your completed courses and a fee for your application. Upon your license approval, you will then be required to pass your provincial exam. This does not hold true for all of Canada, however. Some provinces do not require this to be done, and some only require a test for certain types of insurance. A criminal background check may also need to be completed.

Once you’ve got this far, you’re going to want to get your licence. Everyone needs a licence in order to sell insurance. Typically, a license must be renewed every two-four years. You must stay on top of this to avoid any hassle. Your employer also has the ability to terminate your license. If either your license expires or is terminated, you will most likely need to re-apply and take all of the previous steps again.

Life as an insurance agent can be rewarding – both financially and emotionally. If this is a career that you’re interested in pursuing then you should do some more research on this field. Start by learning more about the specific training requirements of the position and then go from there.
